Alfa Acciai and Acciaierie di Sicilia continually strive for the best available techniques, and are committed to pursuing an ongoing policy to improve environmental performance, minimising the negative impact of their operations on the environment where technically possible and economically sustainable.
Alfa Acciai and Acciaierie di Sicilia have adopted environmental management systems as a tool for all stakeholders which ensures that respect for the environment is pursued and achieved at the best, and through these management systems are committed to:
Knowing, understanding and monitoring developments in their own specific area, internally and externally, to quickly understand changes to risks and opportunities;
Maintaining ongoing constructive dialogue with all stakeholders;
Seeking, assessing and implementing the best available sustainable techniques, defined as technological and/or procedural options;
Planning, monitoring and possibly correcting the efficiency of processes/services implemented internally or by suppliers and subcontractors;
Preventing all forms of pollution and protecting the environment by optimising the consumption of resources and waste production processes, improving and monitoring emissions into the atmosphere and water, containing noise levels, protecting the soil and subsoil, and controlling any other direct/indirect impact;
Planning the management of emergencies and regularly testing response procedures.
In particular, the system is characterised by interaction between environmental requirements and production processes, with the precise aim of identifying environmental aspects, assessing impact regarding activities, and controlling their effect in terms of:
Protecting the soil, subsoil and water;
Offgas filtering system;
Consuming less energy;
Containing noise;
Managing waste;
Ensuring radiation protection.
These objectives underpin the Environmental Policy and are transformed into concrete plans and targets that can be measured and monitored regularly. Alfa Acciai has held certification since May 2005 and Acciaierie di Sicilia since February 2004.
A new feature has been added to the Brescia-based Alfa Acciai production site: the ISO 50001 certification for Energy Management, which helps develop a systematic approach in identifying, recording and evaluating energy-related results thus providing the best most effective means of managing and implementing its corporate Energy Policy.
Alfa Acciai’s key strategic priority is ongoing improvement of the its own corporate performance, including energy performance, through the implementation of energy efficiency measures in production processes and related auxiliary services to reduce the impact on the Environment.
All this is achieved through:
Automation systems for monitoring energy parameters
Consumption diagnostics and definition of interventions
Selection of state-of-the-art technologies suitable for energy consumption mitigation
Recycled content (UNI/PdR 88:2020 according to UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17067)
Nothing is wasted
Scrap is completely recyclable with the electric melting furnace process;
Alfa Acciai and Acciaierie di Sicilia products have been certified as containing at least 97% of recycled material (a very high percentage compared with other construction materials);
Compliance with the requirements relating to recycled or recovered contents and by-products, as set out in the Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) issued by the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, is proven by the certification issued by the relevant certifying body;
This practice is also instrumental to ensuring compliance of products, components and materials with current sustainability protocols for the construction industry (such as LEED and ITACA).
Alfa Acciai and Acciaierie di Sicilia are among the first European companies to obtain SUSTSTEEL certification (sustainable steel).
EUROFER, the European Steel Association has created the mark SUSTEEL to organise, develop and promote the sector of products for steel construction, based on an independent certification scheme, in the context of its members’ sustainability and corporate social responsibility, so as to allow an assessment by the users and the other stakeholders, such as the European, national and local institutions.
